Chionodes fumatella

(Douglas, 1850)790 / 35.096

General comments:
Presumed vagrant.
All three Middlesex records of this Nationally Scarce moth are of adults in a single garden light trap at Hornsey, in 2007, 2009 and 2011. Formerly a coastal species it has spread inland, it is suspected of utilising Bird's-foot Trefoil Lotus corniculatus as the larval pabulum; if this is correct the moth ought to do well in London's various brownfield sites. The Hertfordshire report relates to an example at the light trap on the Rothamsted Estate at Harpenden in 1974 (R. Fairclough).
