Stigmella samiatella

(Zeller, 1839)88 / 4.062

General comments: Mines resembling those of Stigmella ruficapitella on leaves of Sweet Chestnut are very likely to be this samiatella, although ruficapitella has also been bred from this host on occasion. The eggs are variously laid on the upper or lower surface, so the position is not of any help. Stigmella samiatella is also known to mine deciduous oaks elsewhere (see Emmet, 1976). For positive naming, it is always advisable to rear adults for genitalia dissection.
