Mompha miscella

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)884 / 40.012

General comments:
Widespread on the chalk, but absent elsewhere

There can be no doubt that the loss of chalk downland habitat in Hertfordshire is responsible for the very restricted distribution of this moth in Hertfordshire. It was added to the county fauna by A. E. Gibbs from Aldbury, in September 1902 (Barraud, 1903) and was found there again on a Herts Moth Group recording trip in June 2007. The current scarcity of Rock-rose places it under considerable threat. Host plant leaves are mined from October to April and then June/July; this is a species that can be recorded in winter!

Recorded in 5 (12%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1902.
Last Recorded in 2021.
