Mompha ochraceella

(Curtis, 1839)886 / 40.002

Hertfordshire Notes:
Widespread and common.

To the inexperienced observer, adults may superficially resemble those of Mompha epilobiella, but the latter species has grey hind wings whilst ochraceella has them strikingly white. There is also a size difference and the two do not seem to overlap. Caterpillars mine under the 'bark' of the lower stem of Great Willow-herb. These fill with brownish frass and are fairly visible. Later tunnels down to the rootstock for the winter then in spring mines the lower leaves forming a large underside "blister" mine - usually on one side of the midrib.

Recorded in 28 (68%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1890.
Last Recorded in 2024.
