Dystebenna stephensi

(Stainton, 1849)907 / 39.004

General comments:

Widespread but restricted to areas with suitable trees.

Traditionally, the caterpillars are said to be easy to detect as they exude bright orange frass from the bark of mature (especially veteran) oak trees. However, identical feeding signs are produced by larvae of Argyresthia glaucinella and so there is scope for confusion between the two species. Larvae should be collected and reared wherever possible. Adults may also be found sitting very low down on the same trees in the flight period, perhaps a more effortless method of recording than extracting the larvae from oak bark. At Moor Park, on 19th July 2004, Raymond Uffen recorded adults as 'frequent on veteran oaks having complete canopies' and at Danesbury Park, Welwyn, on 22nd July 2004 he found adults on the trunks of oaks of 2.64 to 3.30 metres girth. This is unlikely to be a common species, but may well be found wherever there are very large oak trees.
