Sorhagenia janiszewskae

Riedl, 1962910 / 34.014

General comments:
Extremely local resident.
The three British species of Sorhagenia were all considered as one (rhamniella) until separated by John Bradley (1963. Entomologist's Gazette 14: 41 - 44). The three are inseparable by eye, all have the same two foodplants of Buckthorn and Alder Buckthorn and all often fly together (at least at sites outside our area). They can only be separated by genitalia inspection. When you find one, you usually find lots - sometimes swarming over a single bush: In this situation it is wise to collect more than one specimen otherwise you may miss one or two species! If they are still swarming when you return to the car at the end of your walk take a few further specimens - the composition of the swarm may have changed.
