Small Waved Umber
Horisme vitalbata

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 1781 / 70.126

General comments:
Local resident.

Beginners should take care not to confuse this species with Waved Umber. Although wandering individuals might theoretically turn up almost anywhere, the Small Waved Umber is a characteristic species of to calcareous soils of the north of Hertfordshire, positively avoiding the London Clay Basin and the various associated base-poor glacial gravels deposited upon it. The larvae feed on Traveller's Joy Clematis vitalba, including within some larger domestic gardens.

Recorded in 30 (73%) of 41 10k Squares.
