This is apparently the most widespread and most abundant of the triad of November moths group. The more or less plain, melanic forms (ab. obscurata Staudinger and ab. melana Prout) dominate the population in some areas, but not in others, though there is not really enough available data to discern any geographical trends. Correct identification depends exclusively on examination of the tip of the male abdomen, no matter who the person; this can be done on live moths. Records where this has not been done are all rejected.
