General comments:
Widespread resident.

The Heart and Club has increased in its frequency of capture since about 2000, turning up in many sites where it was almost certainly absent beforehand; the paucity of old records in the map reflects this. Writing about the Bishops Stortford district in 1950, P. B. M. Allan noted this moth as 'Not uncommon formerly', gave a single record from the town and added 'Has not been taken for many years'. The species is not included in the 1985 revision of the Bishops Stortford area list, which implies that there had been no records since the 1950 publication in spite of at least two people actively recording in the area. In my own garden in Bishops Stortford, trapped almost nightly from October 1986 to December 2006, but did not record Heart and Club until 2001; it is now expected in every year.
