Proof will always be required if re-found. Live specimens should be shown to the County Moth Recorder with utmost urgency. The Stout Dart is, potentially, on the verge of extinction in Britain if not already there. Our last record was in 2001, but there are only 26 county records from 1887 to that latter year. It should be noted that this moth is suspected of engaging in enormous population swings, much in the manner of the Dotted Rustic (Rhyacia simulans) which was frequent in the 1980s but which was quite absent ten years later and may now (2022) be staging a comeback. However, unlike the Dotted Rustic, which maintains a population in Scotland, the Stout Dart has probably now vanished from the entirety of the British Isles.
