Widespread but local resident.

The fact that larvae of this species can thrive on Wych Elm, a tree that in general did not succumb to Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s, is probably the reason for the relative frequency today of this species in comparison with White-spotted Pinion. However, the moth is by no means everywhere and it seems probable that there was, and remains, some dependence upon other elm species.
