Extremely local resident. Absent from Middlesex.

Vulnerable (to micro-habitat loss and disturbance).

The Butterbur is generally larger and darker in colouration than the superficially similar Rosy Rustic but it would be extremely exceptional for the moth to fly more than a few feet away from the butterbur plants in which it fed as a caterpillar. Indeed, if trying to light trap this species it is absolutely necessary to put the trap well in amongst the plants, preferably under taller ones so that the light can barely be seen! It is restricted to a small section of the River Lea. However, it is considered very likely that targeted searching of Butterbur plants elsewhere is likely to allow the discovery a least a few overlooked sites.
