This species is a familiar sight across the counties wherever there are trees. The melanic ab. melanotica Havercampf typically forms less than 5 per cent of the population, but this rises to about 10 per cent in the Broxbourne Woods complex and occasionally it becomes more frequent, as during 2003 when about 60 per cent of captures at Hertford Heath West, Balls Wood and other areas of the Broxbourne complex were of this form.
