General Comments:
Widespread and potentially ubiquitous, often in large number

Hertfordshire Notes: The nominate subspecies filipendulae Linnaeus is not found in Britain, where it is replaced by stephensi Dupont. Almost all published lists of moths from any part of Hertfordshire include this species which was given by Foster, in his 1937 county list as 'Noted from all districts'. This remains more or less the case today, with both the caterpillars and the day-flying adults being found just about everywhere that the foodplant grows. The exception may prove to be in parts of the arable and largely featureless north-east sector which, although certainly under-recorded in comparison with the remainder of the county, supports few areas where the foodplant is able to thrive. An example with the normal left hind wing replaced with the forewing pattern - a case of extreme homoeosis - emerged on 2nd July 1949 from a wild pupa taken at Therfield Heath (Hyde, 1951. Proceedings of the South London Entomological & Natural History Society 1949 - : 34 & Plate 3, Fig. F). Examination of the Plate that accompanies the report also shows clearly that the shape of the left hind wing is that of a typical forewing.

Middlesex Notes: Nearly ubiquitous and often abundant, but absent from the City of London and similar sites with no green spaces.
