General comments:
Ubiquitous resident

There is much variation in the dark central band across the forewing; in some examples it is complete whilst in others it is reduced to a square spot on the leading edge. There is also small variation in terms of the degree of whiteness of the wings, but whilst many slightly greyish examples can be found in Hertfordshire the true melanic f. thules Prout appears to be very rare. In some books, thules is erroneously treated as a Shetland Islands subspecies, but the same form is quite common in the London Area (Plant, 1993) and apparently also in other urban areas of England. Colour alone does not define a subspecies.
