Opostega salaciella

(Treitschke, 1833)119 / 5.001

Hertfordshire Notes:
A record from 'Hitchin' made in 1885 by J. H. Durrant is not mapped because it is not clear where in the Hitchin area the species was found. Other historical records are from Bricket Wood before 1890 (A. F. Griffith) and at Cheshunt prior to 1901 (W. C. Boyd). Modern records are all a result of hard work and dedication on the part of Raymond Uffen, who has found it at Croxley Common Moor, Nomansland Common and Panshanger - all acid-grassland sites. At Panshanger Park on 19th June 2005 and at Nomansland Common on 10th July 2005, Raymond noted that the adults climb up the stems of the foodplant from 6 pm (at Panshanger) or from 7 pm (Nomansland - a month later), and then take to the wing at dusk. Eggs were laid singly on the stems and on the lower surface of leaves.

Middlesex Notes:
On Sheep's Sorrel Rumex acetosella. Sparsely distributed in Middlesex, with adults noted in June and July, with an outlier in August at Wembley. Older literature suggests a flight between 19:00 and 20:00 hours, when mating pairs may be found. This has not yet been tested in Middlesex; areas with abundant foodplant could usefully be tried.

Recorded in 16 (39%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1885.
Last Recorded in 2023.
