General comments: Extremely local, possibly absent, but more likely overlooked in calcareous ground with suitable foodplant. Associated with sedges (Carex).
J. F. Stephens records "Heribeia forsterella Z[eller]" for Hertford in his 1834 publication Illustrations of British Entomology: 263. Durrant (1888) summarised the Lepidoptera recorded, but suffixes his opinion with a question mark, since it is forsterella of Fabricius, not Zeller, that we are here concerned with. However, Stephens also illustrates "Heribeia simpliciella" as a new species, on the same page, so it seems to me that Durrant was incorrect and that the Heribeia forsterella Z. illustrated by Stephens is Glyphipterix forsterella (Fabr.). There are no other records for the county until 28 May 2011, when Raymond Uffen found this species at Bricket Wood Common, along a 'ride' created when a pipeline was buried. The herbaceous vegetation in the middle of the ride was quite unlike that in the clearings because of the alkaline Chalky Boulder Clay brought to the surface by disturbance.
There are no known Middlesex records.
