Phyllonorycter ulicicolella

(Stainton, 1851)339 / 15.060

Hertfordshire Notes:
Lcal, but locally common. Likely to be found in association with most Gorse bushes in the county. Adults caught by Eric Bradford at Borehamwood on 30th July 1966 were our only evidence of this species in Hertfordshire until very recently. The caterpillars mine under the bark of shoots and modified leaves (spines) of Gorse from September onwards. The mines are very hard (and painful) to find. However, a recently published paper in the journal Entomologist's Record presented details on how to find the larval mines. Gorse Ulex is scarce in Hertfordshire, but acting on the new information we were able to find the moth at the first two sites examined.

Middlesex Notes:
Unrecorded, but almost certainly present. Gorse bushes should be carefully examined.

Determination by Genitalia Examination Required

Mine: Moth needs to be reared and, in some cases, possibly dissected.

Recorded in 4 (10%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1966.
Last Recorded in 2023.
